Thought on Congregationalism

(start at 17:09) “There is no protection for a church with a bad pastor.” – James McDonald.

I disagree. They can and must oust him like Paul tells the churches of Galatia in Galatians 1:8-9.

There is a chance of protecting faithfulness in a bad church with good pastors. That’s the job of the pastor-elder: to prayerfully teach, oversee, equip, and model mature Christianity. In doing his ministry well he helps immature and unregenerate members receive life and grow in maturity through the Spirit taking the Word causing it to bear fruit in the lives of the flock. That’s what shepherding is. And congregationalism forces the pastor-elder to shepherd well. It hinders him lording it over his congregation.
