Thinking about leadership development at CrossView Church

As a pastor called to equip and train members and leaders of our church, I was thinking of how to work that out in 2012 using Elliot Grudem’s post as a catalyst for thought.

Where our church is headed and how the leaders will be deployed?

  1. We want every member of our church to be equipped and capable of gospelizing both non-Christians and Christians and we want them to be doing that regularly in their lives. We want every member to functionally be a disciple-making disciple.
  2. We need to train disciples to be disciple-makers, which is why I will have a pastors’ training team as the first line of disciple-makers at CrossView.
  3. The disciple-makers will be gospelizing at least one (preferably at least 2) people at any given moment of their lives formally as well as all the other members and neighbors God gives them opportunity to informally.
  4. These disciple-makers will meet monthly as a group with the pastor-elders for prayer, assistance, coaching, equipping, and development.

What I expect from the participants in the pastors’ training team?

  1. The pastors’ training team of disciple-makers will first be trained in an intensive course ending with a 2-day retreat (overnight).
  2. The training team is expected to finish all of the assignments (on time!) and be prepared to discuss or apply the content in our training sessions.
  3. After the intensive course, the training team will meet every month as a group with the pastor-elders for prayer, assistance, coaching, equipping, and development. This will be a 2-3 hour gathering.
  4. The disciple-makers will be gospelizing at least one (preferably at least 2) people at any given moment of their lives formally as well as all the other members and neighbors God gives them opportunity to informally. This means they should be setting aside at least 3 hours a week for formal gospelizing (bible reading (whether evangelistic or edifying Christians) and accountability.

What demands would there be on a CMT leader?

  1. He must share life with his team at least 3 different times during the week and make that normal for the team.
  2. He must prepare, organize, lead, and use the meeting times to equip and develop the team.
  3. He must be gospelizing informally and formally meeting up with some of his team.
  4. This will mean he should integrate 8 hours of his week with his team (#1 and #3) apart from the weekly team meeting.

What makes one qualified and called to be a pastor-elder?

  1. An inner desire to be a pastor-elder
  2. Meeting the qualifications of Titus 1:5-9 and 1 Timothy 3:1-7
  3. Regularly gospelizing both Christians and non-Christians in deepening relationships.
  4. Recognition and trust from the church in being shepherded by the man
  5. Recognition among current pastor-elders that the man is qualified, gifted, and already functioning as a pastor-elder
  6. There will also be an intentional questioning of the spouse, kids, and close friends who are able to see the brother’s life up close and point out strengths and weaknesses.

What kind of demands on their time are there for those who would serve as a pastor-elder (6-8 hours a week plus 4-9 hours in a month depending on whether there are 1 or 2 pastor-elder meetings that month)?

  1. Pastor-elder oversight meeting every 2-3 weeks (one night, 2-3 hours).
  2. Actively serving the Word to people in the church and neighborhood (through leading a CMT or discipling a number of members or neighbors one on one or in smaller groups). This can take 4-5 hours of your week.
  3. Time for personal study and development alongside one’s regular bible reading. This would mean reading good books and writing or discussing it with others. (2-3 hours a week) – Recommended books: Cross-Centered Life by CJ Mahaney, Humility by CJ Mahaney, The Enemy Within by Kris Lungaard,
  4. Attend 80% of the church disciple-makers meetings in the year (2-3 hours)
  5. Regularly attend Sunday gatherings including lunch.

What are the doctrinal requirements for being a pastor-elder?

  1. CrossView’s Statement of Faith
  2. Strong grasp on Baptist distinctives (baptism, congregationalism, ecclesiology)
  3. Strong stance against cultural tide (gender issues, homosexuality, ecumenism)
