What do elders do?

Alexander Strauch answers in his book, Biblical Eldership (16):

“Elders lead the church [1 Tim 5:17; Titus 1:7; 1 Peter 5:1-2], teach and preach the Word [1 Timothy 3:2; 2 Timothy 4:2; Titus 1:9], protect the church from false teachers [Acts 20:17, 28-31], exhort and admonish the saints in sound doctrine [1 Timothy 4:13; 2 Timothy 3:13-17; Titus 1:9], visit the sick and pray [James 5:14; Acts 20:35], and judge doctrinal issues [Acts 15:16]. In biblical terminology, elders shepherd, oversee, lead, and care for the local church”

One Response to What do elders do?

  1. Elder Angel L. Roman says:

The greatest responsibility of elders is to PRESERVE, DEFEND, and Be a LIVING EPISTLE of the gospel of Jesus Christ and the true uncompromised Doctrine of Salvation by faith in Jesus Christ, not of works, and the true doctrine of the the Baptism of the Holy Ghost and fire. Elders called by God know this and our first elders in the book of Acts were very aware of this and defended it with thier lives. They teached and preached Jesus Christ and the Baptism of the Holy Spirit EVERYWHERE they went. I am appalled at how many preachers don’t even mention Christ anymore in their sermons. seeking from books and other sources to preach with excellency of words instead of seeking from God to preach in demonstration of Holy Spirit and power. Elders have a pastoral role in the Word of God. Elders have to be filled with the Holy Spirit to discharge their duties in the church. Elder are called to lead the church by thier personal example of ALL of the fruits of the Sirit at work. Be encouraged saints and be blessed. Bro. Angel L. Roman
